Part 6
Bartholomew
When Bartholomew is first mentioned in the Gospels, he is listed with Philip as a disciple of Jesus (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14). Sometimes Bartholomew is called Bartholomew of Nathanael, probably because he was from the area of Nathana in northern Israel.
Philip and Bartholomew are often mentioned together, suggesting that they may have been close colleagues. In John 1:43-49, after Philip met Jesus, he found Bartholomew and told him, "We have found Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph, whom Moses wrote the prophet".
According to tradition, Bartholomew continued to preach the Gospel after the resurrection of Jesus and traveled to different places in mission. He is believed to have preached in India, Armenia, Ethiopia, and more.
According to ancient Christian tradition, Bartholomew ultimately gave his life for the preaching of the Gospel in martyrdom. Although there are no detailed historical records, some early Christian texts, as well as later hagiography, mention his martyrdom.
In general, Bartholomew was one of the disciples of Jesus. Although the story about him is not detailed in the "New Testament", according to tradition and historical records, we can learn about his identity as a disciple and his Efforts in evangelism and missions.
